WWTLC “Name A Tree”
Name A Tree is an ongoing project that honors beloved individual women or women’s groups while providing much-needed funding for The Land.
Name A Tree is somewhat like our equivalent of adding a name to a park bench. Of course, we don’t make plaques and hammer them into trees; and no one gets to actually own or keep a tree. There is a virtual tour online with a directory; each named tree has its own geocode and is easily findable on the virtual tour.

HISTORY OF WWTLC NAME A TREE
Since 2019, Po Wood – a dedicated sister of the ferns – has taken the initiative to visit The Land, take photos of hundreds trees, and geo-locate each one (capture tree GPS coordinates). A virtual tour has been created, and as trees are named, they are added. Po continues to gradually add trees from the various locations on the 650 acres. In this way, we’re creating a scrap book honoring our herstories on The Land even as we work together to realize the vision of preserving her for the good of women and girls forever!
A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM PO
When Fest ended, like so many others, I had a lot of feelings. I tried to be okay with it ending, so I carried on like it was no big deal. It wasn’t until months later that I started really letting in how much Fest meant to me, and how much I missed it. WWTLC was created by a handful of smart girls, and one happened to be my wife. I bailed on most conversations about The Land purchase, but they did it. They went and made a deal with LV, and are in process of purchasing The Land. Here we are, years later, and I AM ALL IN!
Last year when I was working on The Land at a few gatherings, I was inspired to find a way to capture and offer up trees for donations. Name A Tree was born. I started with more than 300 images with geographical coordinates to offer up. Through conversations with the WWTLC board and the magic of Nedra Johnson, we have developed a beautiful opportunity for women to be able to honor others by donating via WWTLC’s Name a Tree program. Kind of like Naming a Star after someone: You don’t get to own the star, but you can name it. Nedra has made a wonderful Tour of Trees that will be exciting for all, weaving together tree dedications, our herstory, and fun facts about The Land. This year, I went back to The Land and now have 700 trees in my Name A Tree portfolio, with more to come. Trees are in zones from which women can pick. Give me a little background and I will find your tree. I really do put a lot of thought into every tree I select for you.
HOW DOES NAME A TREE WORK?
- WWTLC requests a minimum donation of $250 per tree. Many women “pass the hat” or create Facebook fundraisers to collect money from many people. Some trees (e.g., Frances Wasserlein’s) have raised more than $1000 each to benefit The Land.
- Be creative in your fundraising! If buying a tree for, say, your mother, reach out to all relatives and friends (including guys) who would like to see her honored. Even if they’ve never heard of The Land and don’t care about WWTLC, they will be pleased to donate for something that permanently honors your mom.
- As long as it’s woman-identified in some way, your tree can be named after an individual woman (living or gone), a women’s organization or performance group, an influential foremother, a special location on The Land from the MichFest years, even yourself.
HOW DO I NAME MY TREE?
NAME YOUR TREE: Tell us the name of your tree. It can be up to three lines, 15 characters per line.

If you could use help writing this dedication, someone from our team will cheerfully and thoughtfully help you. Just let us know. ATTRIBUTION: What should come after this statement on the Name A Tree tour app: “This dedication was generously supported by: _______”? It could be your name a group name or kept anonymous. Just let us know.
PHOTOS: Send up to three photos.
LOCATION: Decide in which area of The Land you would most like your tree to be. It is not possible to select individual trees, but we can get you into the general area. See the list of areas below.
SEND US YOUR INFO: The name of your tree, your dedication, your photo(s), and how you’d like to be credited as the donor to nameatree@wwtlc.org. (You can use your name, credit a group of donors, or choose to be credited as “anonymous.”) We will follow up with you.
